What style of capoeira do you teach?

We stand firmly in the tradition of “Capoeira Contemporânea”—embracing the athleticism and discipline of serious practitioners (like our Mestre Andre), as well as the forward-looking evolution of the sport, without losing touch with the playfulness, cultural knowledge, social savvy and improvisational intelligence that is required in every capoeira roda.

Capoeira grew out of the Afro-Brazilian experience and struggle against slavery. It has deep African roots. Much of the folklore, traditions and songs of capoeira only make sense against that background. Today capoeira is global, and has practitioners and instructors from all cultures and walks of life.

Is capoeira good for self-defense?

Do you teach kids?

No. Our classes are for adults exclusively.

What should I wear to class?

Clothes you can move in! Your best bet is athletic wear that’s on the form-fitting side (too flowy and it becomes awkward for inversions—cartwheels and handstands). For footwear, you can practice barefoot or in athletic shoes with minimal soles (so you don’t roll your ankles). Regular students should plan on purchasing a capoeira uniform.

How much does it cost?

You can find our membership prices here.

Can I do drop-ins?

The best way to make progress in capoeira is to train regularly, so we don’t offer a drop-in payment format. However if you’re training regularly elsewhere and you’re in town for a bit, please feel free to drop in!

Does capoeira have a belt system?

Yes. Our capoeira uniforms are worn with colored cords. The progression is from white cord (or no cord) to black (for capoeira masters). It takes a long time to get to black, so it’s important to enjoy the journey!
